Miss CHOI Sin Man (MPhil) Awarded the Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student (2009-2010)
Paper Title:
Game Theory and Stochastic Queueing Networks with Applications to Service Systems
Supervisor:
Dr. W.K. Ching, Department of Mathematics
Dr. N.K. Tsing, Department of Mathematics
Economic aspects of service systems are of great importance to real-world applications. In her thesis, Miss Choi applies stochastic queueing networks and game theory, important subjects in operation research, to study economic problems related to service systems with multiple servers, namely the problem of finding the optimal pricing strategy, and the study and control of the economic behavior of independently operating service providers. The mathematical results derived from this original research contribute to a better understanding of the relationships among queueing systems, game theory and pricing strategy.
Miss Choi has a solid background in both mathematics and statistics, and is noted for her excellent skills in computer programming and numerical simulation. During her MPhil study, she has published three papers in international journals and five papers in conference proceedings. She has also received numerous academic honours and awards, including an HKU Foundation Scholarship (2005-2007), a CV Starr Scholarship (2007), and IEOR Faculty Fellowship, UC Berkeley (2011).
Outside of her academic work, Miss Choi has also participated in and won multiple competitions at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contests, and has served on the Organizing Committee of the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics.
Miss Choi is currently pursuing her PhD degree in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California, Berkeley in the U.S.
