Course description: Linear algebra has wide applications to diverse areas in natural science, engineering, management and social science. Instructed by university teachers, the course "Linear Algebra I" (MATH2101) will provide gifted secondary school students with the basic concept of linear structure through many concrete examples in the Euclidean spaces. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will be awarded six credits if they eventually study in the Faculty of Science at HKU (for other HKU faculties, subject to the approval of individual faculties).
Course contents: Same as a regular university course at HKU, this course will comprise lectures and tutorials. It will cover basic theory of linear algebra in the following areas:
Assessment: Assignments (10%), two midterm tests (40%) and one final exam (50%)
The 2.5-hour final exam will be held on August 30, 2014. No supplementary examination will be offered.
Dates: July 2 - August 31, 2014 (Saturdays only)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Venue: The University of Hong Kong
Eligibility: Local/ Mainland/ Overseas High School Students
Pre-requisite: Applicants need to obtain good results in a screening test (will be held on May 31, 2014 (Saturday) for applicants with Hong Kong Identity Cards) given by HKU Department of Mathematics.
