Course Description:

Linear algebra has wide applications to diverse areas in natural science, engineering, management and social science. Instructed by university teachers, the course "Linear Algebra I" (MATH2101) will provide gifted secondary school students with the basic concept of linear structure through many concrete examples in the Euclidean spaces. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will be awarded six credits if they eventually study in the Faculty of Science at HKU (for other HKU faculties, subject to the approval of individual faculties).

Course Contents: It will cover basic theory of linear algebra in the following areas:

1. Linear Equations and Matrices
2. Vector Geometry
3. Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations

Credit Bearing Programme: 6 credits

Assessment: Assignments (10%), two midterm tests (40%) and one 2.5 hour written examination (50%) [Note: No supplementary examination will be offered.]

Date: July 4 - July 30, 2016 (Every Monday & Thursday)

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Venue: The University of Hong Kong

Level-of-study: Secondary school students aged 16 or above

Pre-requisite: Pass the screening test
