The Simon Marais Mathematics Competition is a problem-solving competition in mathematics for undergraduates in the Asian-Pacific region, (http://www.simonmarais.org/).

With the help of Dr. Doris, Haiyu ZHANG for the administrative work, and our Ph.D. student Mr. Tak Wing CHING for conducting the training sessions, we have 17 HKU math majors (out of 38 HKU students) joined this competition on 7 October, 2017 and they were doing very well and have won the following prizes:

  • University prize - 1st place [AUD 20000]
  • Individual prize - 3rd place by Wang Daoye (Mathematics major) [AUD 1250]
  • Individual prize - 10th place by Leung Ga Wai (Actuarial Science and minor in Computational and Financial mathematics) [AUD 200]
  • Pairs prize - 6th place by Tang Xun (Mathematics major) and Feng Yueqing (first year student, intend to be Mathematics major) [AUD 2000]
  • Pairs prize - 9th place by Gong Zhengyangguang (Physics major and Mathematics minor) and Ramanujam Kamaraj (Mathematics major) [AUD 1333.34]
