Course description: Linear algebra has wide applications to diverse areas in natural science, engineering, management, and social science. Instructed by university teachers, this course will provide gifted secondary school students with an introduction to the theory and techniques of linear algebra. It is a condensed version of "Linear Algebra" (a regular university course at The University of Hong Kong, coded as MATH1111), which is a foundation course for all mathematics students, and an important course for all students from the faculty of science. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students will be given six credits if they eventually study in the faculty of science at HKU (for other HKU faculties, subject to approval).

Course contents: Same as a regular university course at HKU, this course will comprise lectures and tutorials. It will cover basic theory of linear algebra in the following areas:

  1. Linear Equations and Matrices
  2. Vector Geometry
  3. Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations

Assessment: Assignments (10%), two midterm tests (40%) and one final exam (50%)

Dates: Eight Saturdays from July 7 to August 25, 2012

Time: 9:00-12:30 (lectures), 14:00-16:30 (tutorials)

Venue: The University of Hong Kong

Eligibility: Normally Form 7, Senior Secondary 1-3 students from local (or equivalent), and students in lower forms with strong interest in mathematics.

Pre-requisite: Applicants need to obtain good results in a screening test (will be held on June 2, 2012) given by HKU Department of Mathematics.

Language of Instruction: English

Programme Fee: HK$4,260

Remarks: Students with excellent performance will be granted scholarships. Students in financial need are eligible to apply for partial or full subsidies (please upload application letter together with supporting documents such as a copy of salary slip/income proof within three months online through "supporting documents--others").
