Some advice to students who want to major in mathematics

Students with different mathematics background can major in mathematics by taking different paths.

  • In the table below, there are some suggestions for introductory level courses.
    You can find the course description by clicking the course names.
    • Qualification Suggestion
    M1 or M2 Take the following course in the first semester of year 1.
  • MATH1013 - University Mathematics II (offered in both semesters)
    • Take at least one of the following courses in the second semester of year 1.
  • MATH2012 - Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics (offered in both semesters)
  • MATH2101 - Linear Algebra I (offered in both semesters)
  • MATH2211 - Multivariable Calculus (offered in both semesters)
  • MATH2241 - Introduction to Mathematical Analysis (offered in both semesters)

    • Students with very strong interests and good ability are recommended to take MATH3002 - Mathematics Seminar in year 2 (offered in 2nd semester). MATH3002 is only available to year 2 BSc students.

    Core Mathematics It may be difficult for students with only DSE Core Mathematics to major in mathematics. If you have strong interests and believe that you have good ability, the following is a suggestion to you. Consult Dr. G. Han or Dr. K.H. Law or Prof. K.M. Tsang or Dr. C.W. Wong or Dr. S. Wu for more advice.

    Take and obtain a good grade in the following course in the first semester
  • MATH1011 - University Mathematics I (offered in both semesters)
    • Take the following course in the second semester
  • MATH1013 - University Mathematics II (offered in both semesters)
    • Take the following two courses in the second year
  • MATH2101 - Linear Algebra I (offered in both semesters)
  • MATH2211 - Multivariable Calculus (offered in both semesters)
    • Students from the Mainland

    For students who have passed Gao Kao Mathematics (for Science students):

    Take the following course in the first semester of year 1.

  • MATH1013 - University Mathematics II (offered in both semesters)

    • Take at least one of the following courses in the second semester of year 1.

  • MATH2012 - Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics (offered in both semesters)
  • MATH2101 - Linear Algebra I (offered in both semesters)

    Take and obtain a good grade in the following course in the first semester
