Abstract

This is the first of a series of lectures on the iteration theory of rational functions. In these lectures, we shall focus on the dynamics of a rational function on its Fatou set. In particular, we shall discuss Sullivan's No Wandering Domains Theorem. In this first lecture, we shall introduce the basis concepts of complex dynamics and prove some simple properties of the Fatou and Julia sets of a rational function.

An excellent introduction to the topics we shall cover is Alan Beardon's book, Iterations of Rational Functions. This talk will be accessible to graduate students and senior undergraduates.
