Obituary - 悼念黃用諏教授

Obituary (May 14, 2004)

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of an elder statesman of the Department of Mathematics and of the University, Professor Wong Yung Chow, on the morning of May 13, 2004 at the advanced age of 91.

Professor Y.C. Wong was the main figure in building up the HKU Department of Mathematics into what it is today. He served actively for near to three decades since 1948 until he officially retired in 1976 but continued to keep in close contact with the Department as Emeritus Professor. Besides serving as the Head of Department in 1948-1973, he served as the Dean of Engineering in 1950-1953, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor in 1963-1966. Professor Wong was also much involved with the groundwork of the establishment of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and served in its Council from 1964 to 1991. He was the Founding President of the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (established in 1972) and also the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Mathematical Society, which he helped to establish in 1979. His long and fruitful career spanning six decades as mathematician and educator had touched on many lives and exerted influence on the academic career of many. We should all feel grateful for his long years of contribution and service to the Department, to the University, to the local community and to the discipline of mathematics.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife, Shong-Lin, and his two sons, Richard and John.

The funeral service will take place at the Hong Kong Funeral Home on 19 May 2004 at 11:00 a.m. The hall at the funeral home is open for colleagues, students and friends to pay their last respects to Professor Wong from 5:00 p.m. on 18 May 2004.
